Sandys Nappies General Overview

The Sandy's fitted Nappy is world famous for its great absorbency, leak-proof design and ease of washing!

Sandy's nappies are a two part system. The Sandys is the absorbent nappy part and over the top you will need to put a separate waterproof wrap/cover. The most popular wrap to use is the Mother-ease Airflow wrap or the Mother-ease Rikki.

Sandys are one of the few fitted nappies on the market that has gentle elastics at the front and back at the waist. All round waist elastic increases containment and ensures the optimum fit. Leg openings are also fully elasticated to ensure poos remain contained no matter the consistency or poonami. Mother-ease also use the highest quality never fail elastics

Sandys fasten using poppers on the side of the nappy allow you to adjust the waist and leg settings independently making them ideal if your baby has a slim waist and chubby legs or vice versa.  The side poppers are also ideal for tummy sleepers as there is nothing to dig into baby on the front.

Sandys are a generous length and stretchy making them suitable for the vast majority of children including those taller than average or chunky monkeys.  Slimmer children fit in them well but will stay in the smaller width settings for longer.

The stretch terry fabric and popper fastenings mean that some people like to use it as a trainer pull-up pant but with the added advantage of the full absorbency of a proper nappy.

Sizing

Sandy's Cotton is available in  three sizes, giving you the best fit as baby grows.

  • X-Small (newborn), 6-12lbs
  • Small, 8-20lbs
  • Large, 20-35lbs

Is there an XL Sandy's Size?

Yes there is! It's called Toddle-Ease but that's really just another name for an XL Sandys. Toddle-Ease is available in original cotton Toddle-Ease and Toddle-Ease Dry. Many children are potty trained before outgrowing the large Sandys at 35lbs and so will not need the Toddlease size of nappy. If however you do have a larger child the ToddleEase; is suitable for children over 35lbs and when boosted makes a fantastic and reliable night nappy as well.

How do I use it?

Inside the Sandys you use a separate liner to make cleaning pooey nappies easier. The nappy liner can be either disposable paper liner or a reusable fleece.

When you come to change the nappy you will reuse the cover and just change the inner Sandys nappy (and liner).  The Sandys nappy can also be used for night time, you will extra absorbency provided by an additional booster, the Sandys Booster is the perfect choice.

Sandys Dry nappies can be tumble dried on low but preferably air dried.

Nappy Fabric

Natural Cotton Terry- dense 85% cotton inner, 15% polyester

Mother-ease's natural fabrics contain a small percentage of polyester in the core of the fabric and this polyester never touches your babies delicate skin. Mother ease's fabrics are custom knit specifically for them and include a poly core for shrinkage control + durability - as a natural fabric that has to endure this many washes would wear out too quickly using only 100% cotton

Sandy's Dry with a built in staydry liner is found on it's own separate product page.

How is a Sandy's Dry different to cotton Sandy's nappies?

Sandys Cotton and Sandy's Dry are both made of the same natural cotton terry and are identical in their leak proof design apart from one key difference.

  • The Sandy's Dry is fully lined inside with the high tech Mother-ease Stay Dry lining.
  • The in built stay dry lining means baby will be kept dry at every part of the nappy
  • Even in hard water the Sandy's Dry liner will remain soft against the skin
  • Sandy's Dry removes the need to use a separate nappy liner.
  • Original Cotton Sandy's allows the child to feel wetter which helps potty training
  • The Stay dry liner in polyester so if you prefer all natural products stick with the Original Cotton Sandys

Mother-ease Care Guide

Initial Wash

  • Add no more than 10-12 nappies to your washer & dryer in each initial wash. Remember to check your lint screen before each wash & dry.
  • Set your washing machine to a full wash cycle with a large size load for 10-12 nappies (smaller if less nappies). Use only HOT water.
  • Add your detergent - see detergent disclaimer.
  • Line dry or machine dry the diapers on a medium heat setting.

Regular washing

  • Be sure to wash your cloth nappies at least every other day. If the soiled nappies are stored longer, run them through the initial rinse cycle and toss back into your nappy pail. (Tip - you can add 1/2 oz of laundry detergent to the rinse cycle to start cleaning sooner.)
  • Use your washing machines normal wash cycle and set the water temperature to hot. Use a large load size (for 12-18 soiled nappies + covers) and add the detergent manufacturers recommended amount of detergent. Then let the machine take care of the rest!  (Tip - running the diapers through an extra rinse creates unnecessary wear and over the 2 1/2 years of use, you will reduce the longevity of your diapers). (Tip 2 - Select your washing machines Sanitary Cycle for even hotter water if you can.)
  • Once your nappies have finished the wash cycle, it's time to dry them. You can either line or machine dry them;

Line Drying - hang to dry in your basement or outside on the line. (Tip - Sun naturally removes stains. Even works on a cold, winters day as long as the sun is out

Machine Drying - Toss in your dryer on medium heat (low for covers). (Tip - Tossing line dried diapers into your dryer for a short cycle will fluff them up but tumbling action adds additional wear)

*Coloured diapers may bleed and should be washed accordingly

Mother-ease Warranty

Mother-ease offers a lifetime warranty on our Snaps and Elastics.
This warranty is for the reasonable lifetime of the diaper. This does not cover slight relaxing of elastics.

Mother-ease offers a 1-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship on our:
Sandys,  Fitted Diapers, One Size Fitted Diapers, Wizard Duo Inserts, Reusable Nursing Pads, Baby Wipes, Absorbent Liners and Wizard Boosters.

This covers product stitching, seams and fabric holes discovered immediately upon receipt of item. This does not include normal wear and tear, slight variances in snap placement, odour issues, pilling, leaks, staining, repelling and holes or tears in the fabric or loose stitching due to wash routine or regular use.

Mother-ease offers a 6-month warranty against defects in materials and workmanship on our:
Diaper covers, Wizard Uno's, Big Kid Training Pants and Bedwetter Pants.

This covers product stitching, seams, holes discovered upon arrival, and irregular deformity. This does not cover staining, fading, slight variances in snap placement, leaks, pilling, holes or tears in fabric or loose stitching that develop due to wash routine or regular use (items caught, torn or melted in the washer/dryer).

This warranty is available only to the original purchaser from the date of purchase.

All warranty is null and void when products containing harsh solvents such as hydrogen peroxide (oxygen bleach), sodium percarbonate or optical brighteners are used.

When washing your covers Mother-ease recommend you wash them in a mesh bag to keep them away from Velcro on your nappies and from getting caught in washing machine doors.  Always secure the Velcro on your wraps so they don't stick to the binding in the wash.
Please contact us if you think you have a faulty product and need to claim under the Mother-ease warranty. We will liaise with Mother-ease for you. Mother-ease will require any product to be returned or destroyed before a replacement.

The manufacturer may ask for proof of which detergent you have been using during the period you've had the item so we strongly recommend you keep your receipts you can prove you've been washing following the supplier's guidelines.  A photo of the detergent box and a photo of the detergent ingredients will be needed plus receipts of detergent purchases in the time you have owned the faulty nappies (usually 1 or 2 receipts showing purchases across the previous 6 months).  If you have bought Mother-ease's detergent through us during the time you've used the nappies please let us know and we'll have all your receipts already on record for you.

Mother-ease decision on any warranty claim is final.

Absorbent but leaky
Rating:
26 April 2024  |

I've got a few of these in my stash, but they're becoming the last ones I reach for. It's true they are super absorbent, and it's true they are very easy to put on thanks to the poppers and not needing a booster, but the frills round the edges always manage to sneak out of the wrap, causing leaks long before the nappy has reached its full absorbency. I'm careful to tuck the edges in and never have this problem with other nappies. I'm using them with Airflows so it might be that the loose fit of the Airflows doesn't work well with the frilly edges. But given that they're made by the same company, it's a bit annoying! They are also super slow drying, usually still hanging on the airer 48 hours later when the next nappy wash comes out of the machine.

Response:

Sorry to hear you're having problems with your nappies. Sandys as you've found are super absorbent.

The frills are not designed to be tucked in and should be left out as that ensures the leg seal is strong.

The Airflow is designed to work with the Sandys and the airflow should be wider than the nappy so there is a good gap between the nappy edge and the wrap.

As baby gets bigger and fills the wrap it can make the wrap snug. The airflow is a puffy roomy fit and it is easy for baby's weight gain to sneak up without realising the wrap is getting too small.

A wrap that is getting too small is more likely be the cause of a leak than a wrap that is too big.

The leak that you've described will be due to the wrap and not the nappy. Please double check your wrap sizes and if in doubt go up a size wrap.

Absorbent nappy
Rating:

These are great nappies and very absorbent. They can be used as a night nappy with the addition of a booster too. They are easy to use for nursery, and other people not used to reusable nappies. They fit well, but you have to make sure the 'frilly' edges are tucked into the wrap, otherwise you get leaks! They are fairly slow drying.

We bought some sandies after my LO started to grow out of Bamboozles and they’re just wonderful. They are slim for a night nappy with plenty of room and because of the poppers to the side they can be used as a pull up now my lo doesn’t want to lie down for a nappy change. The only thing wrong is I need to buy a few more!

They are cute, fit really well, absorbent, and most importantly, they are extremely easy to put on and take off. I find them really flexible and practical.I wish there were still more colours available because they are so cute!

Oh, and I feel like my baby can move more freely in these than, for example, the wizard duos..

I had to look for other nappy systems after my toddler started to flood her pocket nappies during the day, and decided to give these a go. I use them with a motherease airflow wrap and they work perfectly together. So far I haven't had any leaks with these - the absorancy is great even without a booster and the nappies contain poos well, too. They're also lovely and soft and stretchy. I actually think I prefer these over my bamboozles!

Too bulky
Rating:
22 February 2021  |

Unfortunately this Nappy doesn’t work well for my baby boy. I guess one category that is overlooked when talking reusable nappy is mobility once the nappy is on.
Once the liner, the nappy with insert and the wrap are on, baby’s bottom looks like Michelin.
I have perservered with it but I also find that it squishes his private parts - the nappy size is definitely not the issue - and he was never happy with wearing it. It also restricts the mobility in the area in between his legs due to all the layers.
I have decided to sample other brands which I prefer to this one but overall I find reusable nappies not baby friendly because it reduces their mobility due to the chunkiness. It maybe a good option once baby can walk and has more ease of movement...
This nappy has good absorbency.

Response:

Depending on your water type all fabrics can go stiff. Either tumbling or rubbing them together can solve this. It's unusual to be on that setting at such a low weight. If you would like to email us on advice@thenappylady.co.uk we can check the fit for you.

Easy to put on a wriggly upright toddler. Poppers face backwards so this helps. Look nice and cosy, room to boost with bamboo or hemp if needed. Fit well under airflow or disana wool pants. Much better than velcro which eventually loses stick.

These (natural cotton size 2) stay soft, despite washing in hard water, and look very comfortable. They appear bulkier than size 2 Bamboozles but are at least as absorbent (used at night, boosted, on a toddler) and don't take as long to dry.

The Workhorse of nappies
Rating:
09 September 2020  |

Very impressed with these. I have heard then described as the “workhorse of nappies” and they lived up to this! I initially tried them as I was impressed with the Motherease airflow which I used over a bamboozle at night. I now use sandy’s day and night and I no longer use my pocket nappies as the sandy’s are just so easy and comfortable for my 5 month heavy wetter! Husband also gets on with them which is a bonus! I recommend these to everyone!

Hadn’t really heard much about these nappies but was buying a selection of two parters and thought we’d give it a go. They are really ace. Easy to put on (the poppers are exactly where you’d want them for a wriggly toddler who will only be changed standing up!), long fit, and work perfect with a absorbent booster and a wool wrap for long sittings. The fluted edges do mean you’d probably want a wool or anavy style pull up wrap especially if you’ve got a girl!

I tried these nappies as an alternative to the traditional ‘Velcro’ night nappies as I am trying to eliminate velcro nappies to protect my other motherease nappies in the wash.

I’m really pleased with them and wish I had tried them sooner. The popper fastening is great and they work really well with an airflow wrap. Nice and simple to do up when my little one rolls off too!

I’m definitely going to buy more of these.

Ok, not the best for containment for small legs
Rating:
20 August 2020  |

I was looking for something similar to a Bamboozle in absorbency that isn’t made of bamboo so tried these for my (then) 6 week old. They’re lovely and soft and I like the side poppers, and they go well with the ME airflow. But, they aren’t as leakproof as a Bamboozle, and the XS size didn’t contain a couple of BF newborn poo explosions, although my baby was well in the weight range. His legs have rounded out and the fit is better now. Not the slimmest 2 part nappy either.

I used these nappies for my daughter who is now 18 and now I’ve purchased more for my 8 week old baby. I love how they are made and the fabulous containment around the legs, even though the fabric and elastic is very gentle on baby’s skin. It can be used as a night nappy with a booster and is less bulky than some other night nappies.

Sandys are my go to nappy if I have any wraps. I like that they have never leaked on me. They last for about 4 hours so if I'm leaving the house and not sure when I will get to change him next I put these on my son. They are easy to fit and not as tight fitting as pocket nappies so leave fewer marks. They look comfy as the elastic aren't tight and they fit lower on the leg which seems more comfortable. So easy to put on as long as you have a large enough wrap to cover. Their sizes last ages so right now I'm on a small Sandy with a medium rikki or airflow.
They're my favourite nappy but I only use in the day as they get too soaked for night. I use bamboozle at night.

I bought one Sandy’s just to try out and I LOVE them . These are now my go to night nappy . My daughter is a slim 9 month old so the small still fits perfectly. Lovely and soft and very absorbant- I usually stick a Sandys stay dry booster in for night time but I have used with a stay dry liner and it was plenty absorbant enough for us. The nappy doesn’t look as modern as the UNO’s BUT i love how soft and comfortable they are for night time and they are natural fibre with the frilly soft edging. I pair with a motherease Airflow wrap and love this combo. Also love that they are sized- as my daughter is dinky it just is so neat ....I highly recommend.

Great for babies that won’t lie down

21 July 2019  |

These are fab for a two part system. My chunky 10 month old won’t lie down so we use these like pull ups, then pull an airflow wrap with 3 of the 4 poppers already done up over the top. It’s not as slim as our unos but it’s not bulky either. Dries quicker than our bamboozles and no Velcro to get fluffy in the wash. They are great on containment we’ve had no leaks despite some epic antibiotic poops (thank goodness he wasn’t in a disposable!!), and the fit is really forgiving so much less tucking and checking than an all in one. I’ll be getting more when I can lay my hands on them.

I knew I wanted to cloth nappy my second baby and spent a lot of time researching for what kind would be suitable. I came across these motherease sandys (size small) and decided to try them. They are working fantastic as I’ve never had any leaks - even breastfed poop (I’m using the motherease airflow wraps) and they are very good quality and wash well. They do take quite a while to get dry though. Even so, I just love using these cloth nappies on my baby and using the poppers to fasten them, they are just lovely

Excellent quality, but very slow drying
Rating:
26 April 2019  |

In terms of containment, absorbency, and ease of use, these nappies are fantastic. I especially like the fact that they are fastened with poppers as this entirely avoids the problem of laundry tabs coming undone in the wash and velcro getting clogged up with fluff.

The only downside is the drying speed. I bought organic cotton and they are the slowest drying nappies I own - consistently slower even than the bambinex bamboo. This is the only reason I haven't awarded 5 stars - they are otherwise excellent and I wish I'd bought more!

Amazing and reliable nappies
Rating:
03 December 2018  |

I purchased a few sandy’s nappies following recommendation from The Nappy Lady after filling in their questionnaire of important criteria for me. They are the first reusable nappies I used and they are bsolutely amazing. Super reliable - we haven’t had any leaks or accidents, despite my baby being exclusively breastfed and having very runny poo (we’ve had plenty of leaks with disposable ones). They are very easy to use and very soft on my baby’s skin.
They take a bit of time to dry (1 day approx) but I was expecting that anyone from organic cotton cotton - I always make sure I wash nappies on time so that I never run out (I have 12 of these and usually load a washing machine per day or day be a half and I have so far never run out of them as they dry on time).

They are a bit bulky, and so I tried a different brand (an all in one made of polyester) and even though they were of a slimmer fit, we had a couple of leaks, so I realised that the Sandy nappies are extremely reliable and very absorbent. I definitely prefer bulkiness over leaks, so these are my favourite cloth nappies!
Shane they don’t come in a size birth-to-potty, though! I will definitely buy a size up when my baby is 20lb.

I would highly recommend (unless slim fit is an must criteria)

We bought one of these as I read so many good reviews, it's been so disappointing! We used it once, it's so bulky and didn't wash well. Then hung it up to dry with our LL microfibre and bamboo nappies and Baba & Boo and it was still damp after two days, the bamboo LL were quicker and they take a while! Not a fan, have given it to a friend to try for her new baby

These were one of the only nappies that fit my little boy from birth (just under 7 lbs). At first they were one of my favourite nappies because they were really easy to put on, had excellent absorption and containment, dried fairly quickly (both cotton and bamboo ones) and fit well under the XS airflow wrap. I liked that you can adjust the waist and legs separately. HOWEVER, at 10 lbs my little boy is already too big for the XS. Even on the largest waist setting he was getting marks from about 9 1/2 lbs even though he has a pretty narrow waist. At 10 lbs the next size up is already a fairly snug fit at the waist. So what seems like a fairly reasonably priced nappy turns out to be poor value for money since they don't fit for anything near the full stated weight range.

I use these nappies at night with a booster and a wool wrap for my little boy. He has very sensitive skin but these are so soft and never leave a mark on him (find the bamboo to be softer than the cotton ones). He is a tummy sleeper and love the fact that these popper at the side so don't dig in to him. They are very absorbant and have never had a leak since folding over the booster at the front (he sometimes soaks through a disposable nappy at night). Find them to be quite bulky though so only use for nighttime.

Nice and soft and absorbent. They do take longer to dry but worth the wait for my heavy wetter!

I should have gotten this one earlier, now he is growing out of it but I am going to get the next sizes for sure, the best nappy I have had so far (combined with wrap and booster) unfortunately still not suitable for nights

Good absorbency, great containment. I like the side snaps but they need getting used to. A bit bulky but doesn't restrict movement like my other big nappies. Really good fit for my tall baby. Organic cotton is nice and soft.

Great for chunky toddlers

Bought this nappy for our nearly 3 year old (tall and chunky) they fit really well on the smallest settings which is especially good after trying many brands which came up too tight. Will be buying more as the price is very reasonable and we gave always found Motherease wraps and nappies to be a reliable, long lasting brand

Washed out and takes ages to dry

When this nappy turned up it looked adorable. Was a beautiful colour and soft and comfortable looking but bulky on, especially with a wrap on top. After one wash it looked discoloured and washed out and I really should have asked for my money back. Though it's been fine to use, it takes days to dry as the booster is sewn in and I think you'd need a tonne of these if you want your baby in cloth full time. Bottom line, bulky, washed out and not time efficient for every day use, yet comfortable, soft and does a good job of keeping mess in. I think there's better out there for the same price.

Response:

sorry you found the nappy washed out. The natural and organic cotton are not bleached so have natural cream colouring. This will fade with washing down to an off white colour. This isn't a fault it's the type of fabric. Check your detergent as if it has optical brighteners and bleaches included (many do) this will lead to fading even quicker.

Good for cloth nappy novices

I have only ever tried a couple of types of cloth nappies, and was put off because they tended to leak out the legs. However, these keep everything well contained and are easy to put on and launder. The elasticated waist is a great feature as well, especially for comfort.
