Thrive Poplar Pocket Nappy Overview

Poplar One size pocket nappies are a very popular, economical  and good quality nappy. That fits the vast majority of baby shapes from 10lbs until potty training. Poplar pocket is based on the original Baba & Boo nappy so if you loved a Baba & Boo pocket you'll love Thrive Poplar pocket.

Each Thrive Poplar One Size nappy comes with 2 absorbent bamboo mix inserts. Initially you would use just one insert while baby is at the bottom of the weight range and as baby gets older you would add the second insert to give you extra absorbency.

The outer cover is made from PUL with a really soft athletic wicking jersey stay dry lining to keep baby's skin feeling dry. As the Poplar reusable nappy is fully lined with athletic wicking jersey and you shouldn't use a separate fleece liner as this can cause run off and leaks. You can however use a disposable paper liner if you want to. The Bambinex paper liner would be the best choice.

The Poplar Athletic Wicking Jersey staydry lining is smooth for easy poo removal.

Sizing

10-35lbs

Most babies fit comfortable into a one size nappy from about 10lbs rather than right from birth. As with all birth to potty / one size nappies there is a compromise on fit at the lower end of the weight range. Even if you just use one insert in the pocket it will be big, newborns are simply too teeny to get a snug fit.

If you want to use cloth nappies from birth as your newborn nappies, you may prefer to use the Thrive newborn option or an even cheaper option are folded muslin nappies.

We have lots of details about folding muslins in our advice section if you'd like to consider this option. Once baby outgrows their newborn nappies around 12lbs, they would easily be able to move into this Thrive Onesize nappies.

How do I use it?

A pocket nappy gets its name from the pocket/pouch at the back of the waterproof part of the nappy where there is an opening. Into this pocket/pouch you simply stuff the absorbent inserts.

The nappy fastens with poppers and has a hip popper to help minimise wing droop. Poppers are the most popular fastening of modern cloth nappies as they are longer lasting and as baby gets older they can't undo poppers like they can with aplix/hook and loop fastening.

The length of the nappy is also altered by poppers; these allow you to fold the front to make the nappy shorter while baby is smaller. As baby grows you gradually change to each length setting to make the nappy longer.

Read our article for more information and photos on how to adjust one size nappies.

Nappy Fabric

Thrive inserts are made from bamboo with a mix of microfibre for added durability.

The athletic wicking lining inside the nappy remains soft next to the skin even if you live in a hard water area. In a hard water area any natural fabrics will go harder over time if they aren't tumble dried. We do try to keep customers away from tumble drying and encourage families to line dry where they can due to the environmental and financial cost. The inserts in the Thrive will go harder but as they are kept under the athletic wicking jersey this will not make any difference to baby.

What else do I need?

Nothing! The nappy comes with everything you need, so you just change the whole nappy each time with no other parts needed. You can add a paper liner if you prefer, for ease of cleaning a dirty nappy.

  • Store the nappy in a wet bag or dry bucket until wash day

  • You can wash at 40 or 60 deg using a full dose of detergent

*Leaking - This is normally a fit or absorbency issue.
*Nappy Inserts
*Nappies bought Pre-Loved/Second Hand or via BST groups on Facebook.

Good pocket nappy
Rating:
16 February 2024  |

The majority of our stash is pockets and we found the Baba+Boo pocket to be amongst the good ones. We have others that we prefer but for the price, it's definitely good quality, good absorbency (2 inserts a little bulky for us) and cute design. They are much more generously sized than some of our other brands so they took a lot longer to fit nicely after other BTP nappies were fitting well.

A great and reliable nappy
Rating:
27 November 2023  |

Things I love:

1. The outside of the nappy is really soft and feels good quality.

2. The inside lining is also super soft and thick. It isn’t quick to bobble and doesn’t get bits stuck in it.

3. The poppers are so easy to push in. On some brands they can be quite stiff, but these snap together without too much force.

4. The double gusset.

5. The inserts are nice and absorbent.

6. The overall shape works well for my baby. I like the three waist poppers and the distance between the one for securing and the two at the top is really good - it keeps the waist band lying flat instead of scrunched and isn’t confusing (I.e when you use the 4th popper it’s easy to see that you should pop the top two in the 4th and 5th).

6. It can be washed at 60 degrees and has full washing and care instructions on the tab inside the pocket. This wasn’t something I considered before buying most of my nappies (all of them having different max temperatures, and very few having care instructions inside) but it’s great that whatever temp I use, these will be fine!

Things I don’t love:

1. The inserts are a little bulky. If I want to use two inserts, I’ll switch out one of the B+B ones for a Little Lamb or Fiyyah bamboo one as they are much thinner.

Overall, I’ve loved this nappy and find myself reaching for it more than some of the other brands I have.

My favourite pocket nappy so far
Rating:
26 October 2022  |

We use these for our "weekend stash". They have the usual convenience of pocket nappies and we love the super soft built in lining. They wash well - no stains yet. Nappy has reasonable drying time. Boosters tumble dry really well. We put 2 boosters in to get a good length of use out of these. It makes baby's bum look quite chunky and we almost always have to use a vest extender. For info... Our "nursery stash" is mostly Tots Bots (Bamboozle nappies and wrap / pad system).

I love Baba and Boo pocket nappies. They are my fav nappy, great absorbtion from the bamboo inserts, and they have really good containment. I don't think we've ever had a leak. Plus the prints are lovely. I've used during the day and night with my 3 month old, adding the hemp booster at night time. Would definitely recommend.

Lovely nappies
Rating:
28 May 2022  |

Really nice nappies, seem to be leek proof so far, really soft and easy to insert boosters. The designs are so lovely. The nappy dries really quickly, the booster takes longer as much thicker but came with 2 per nappy. The only slight issue I've found is that the booster comes up a bit big inside the nappy when the nappy is on the smallest setting but not really a big issue at all. Would definitely buy more and seem good value too.

Bulky but no performance
Rating:
23 March 2022  |

I don't mind a bulky nappy as long as it performs. Unfortunately these nappies aren't for us. We have a heavy wetter and these leak every time, even with all the padding neatly added in and all precautions taken. These are also the only nappy to have failed to contained poo. Our Little Lambs shaped in LL wraps and Motherease wraps with Terry squares have been flawless with containment so far. I was unimpressed to find these leaked consistently. Checked how we are using them and our method seems fine. It would appear that the combo of heavy wetting and breastfeeding cause the nappy to fail as fit and use seem fine.

I also dislike the synthetic smell and feel of these nappies. I do have family who use this system and love them though, just not my 'cup of tea'.

I had this nappy in a newborn size and loved it but my daughter grew out of it. I really didn’t need another daytime nappy when I bought this but I couldn’t resist as I love the pattern. Baba & boo nappies fit so well and are so nice and soft. The double gusset works well for my daughter and the poppers work well for us. This nappy is also a great price.

Baba boo nappies have become an absolute favourite with us. The are absorbent, nice to look at and easy to use both at home and in nursery. They have worked well with both my daughter and son as you can add boosting where needed inside the pocket. I think this nappy is great value, and if I was to build my nappy stash all over again I would just buy these.

Once you get the fit right, these are brilliant nappies. We use one booster and add a little lamb triple bamboo booster (folded at the front) as it's slightly slimmer than two b&b boosters. This combo last us 3 hours on our 9 months old. Perfect for nursery, grandparents etc.

This is a great pocket nappy that can be stuffed with a number of combinations. We love the double gusset on the inside.
We do find this nappy a bit on the larger / wider side so not the best fitting for us (our boy is 9m and quite slim).

An adjustment!
Rating:
23 March 2021  |

Obviously switching to reusables was going to be a learning curve but we have found trying to figure out how tight to make the nappies a bit tricky. Too tight seems uncomfortable, but we've had our share of leaks too. Without the leaks (or with a fitting guide from the nappy company) would have got 5 stars.

Having moved on from a very reliable 2 part system with a newborn I knew they would be different to fit. Have found them very simple to use however and with a vest extender hardly get a leak.

The shells dry very fast and currently only using one insert which speeds up our turnaround time. Haven't used any others to compare to in BTP.

I am a sucker for the pretty prints though!

Beautiful nappies
Rating:
29 October 2020  |

Baba and Boo make up a large proportion of our nappy stash. The prints and quality, in my opinion are just unrivalled. They feel so luxurious and soft for babies bum. Although you don’t need to use a fleece liner with these I do, they are that beautiful I almost can’t stand to see them used for what they are intended for!!!
I invested in these as I was looking for some quicker drying alternatives for winter. The pockets dry really quick and to be honest, the boosters do too considering the thickness. I’ve only given them four stars as I find baba and boo a very, very chunky and bulky fit, something that does put me off but I’ve found them a generally reliable nappy.
Excellent service as always from the nappy lady.

Okay, not great
Rating:
15 September 2020  |

Thought it was great the first time I used it as it contained a poo (a seemingly difficult task for nappies with my baby, and nothing else had apart from airflows or sandys! But then after that first use it’s never contained a poo again! The absorbancy is okay but nothing compared to terries or sandys. It’s okay as a going out nappy or just for a couple hours whilst there’s no other clean/dry ones, but wouldn’t be my go to choice.

Love these for my little girl, they fitted her well since she was around 5 weeks (nearly 11lb). They are so simple to use and made my transition to cloth nappies really easy. Currently just using the one booster and although they are bulkier than disposables they still look cute. Great prints too, surfing dog is my favourite!

I love these nappies so much! They’re the only ones I have found that last almost as long as a disposable - with one bamboo and one hemp booster I can get a good 6 hours out of them in the day, and they’ll do my 5 month old overnight too. Added bonus that they look so beautiful! When they have 2 boosters they are a little bulkier than some other nappies but that’s the trade for them staying dry sooooo long

I like this nappy, it really dries very fast on the line. However the microfiber feels not so natural as in comparison to Tots Bots Easifit which we mostly use. I almost can’t tell when it is damp enough so that I should change it.

Love Baba & Boo

31 July 2020  |

Baba & Boo are some of my go-to nappies. Reliable and easy to fit. We use different boosters to customise absorbency - and have even managed an overnight with two hemp boosters instead of relying on two part system (nappy and wrap which is our usual very trusted approach). Thank you Nappy Lady for another fantastic purchase!

Lovely and soft

30 July 2020  |

I got 2 Baba and Boo pocket nappies and have been using them from 6 weeks to now 13 weeks old for a large (95th percentile) baby girl. She is a heavy wetter, particularly in the morning.
I save these nappies for a morning shift and was getting 2hrs cover with one partially folded insert for a number of weeks. I am currently using 2 inserts folded to give 3 layers for the morning or sometimes a backup night time (if she does a 3am wake up). Everytime I have tested over 2 hours, they have leaked a little bit, I keep trying different folds so it could improve.
They are thick and wide but provide excellent absorbency and dry quickly compared to Thirsties All in Ones. I love using them following our Little Lamb 2 part wrap night time nappies because they are so soft just like the little lambs.
Looking to buy a couple more.

Slightly small
Rating:
15 June 2020  |

This is a lovely well made nappy, great quality. Only reason for giving 4 stars is that it seems to have a smaller fit than other brands of pocket nappies we have. Our 3 month old is already on the middle rise (he is chunky). However the boosters it comes with are lovely, better than all other bamboo/microfibre blends we’ve tried and the lining is SO super soft. If we had a smaller/slimmer baby I would definitely want more.

I really like baba and boo. Reliable, never have a leak, has a double gusset which I think is the difference between baba and boo and other pocket nappies. Beautiful prints, they dry very quickly and are great value. The only downside is that they aren’t as slim as some but at 8 months old we are still only using 1 bamboo insert and getting 3-4 hours out of it. However, I suspect with 2 inserts her bottom will be very chunky!

Easy to fit and feels comfy, just bulky
Rating:
18 May 2020  |

I only have one of these as i was testing a few different nappies. The fleece inside stays really soft and this is probably my softest nappy. The double gusset is great fir containment and Ive not had any leaks with very full ebf poos. The nappy without the insert dries overnight and good that it comes with two inserts as one is always dry so the nappy is ready to use within a few hours. Only downsides (and the reason i didnt buy more) is that it looks pretty bulky and not as big a fit as others. My first baby grew out of some cloth nappies by 18 months so I’m sticking to bigger fitting ones this time

Rating:
16 May 2020  |

I would have give them 5 stars but 2 of the nappy stretch seem ripped (where you’re supposed to put the booster). I only used them once and strictly followed all the guidelines so it can’t be something I’ve done. I didn’t put them in the dryer as I know this can damage them. I was hoping they’d last me a few years so it’s disappointing. I would not purchase them again on that basis. However other than that the ones I have left are very absorbant, easy to use and quick to dry.

Not a great fit for us
Rating:
07 May 2020  |

These nappies are great to look at with their attractive designs but for our tall baby they are just not the right fit. Even with an extra booster they can still leak probably due to them being just too small. I’m sure for a smaller baby they would be much more suitable. They are easy to put on and adjustable and quick drying.

This is a lovely nappy. It feels like very good quality. It comes with two inserts so the absorbency can be increased or deceased depending on your needs. It is quite bulky with both inserts. Unfortunately the fit isn’t great for our baby. I think it would suit chunkier babies better. We tend to have gapes at the legs but I’d try to do them tighter it feels too tight at the top. That’s why I’ve given it 4 stars

One of my favourite pocket nappies
Rating:
17 March 2020  |

These are really nice nappies to use. The double gusset is fantastic for containing liquid BF poo and we've never had a leak from these nappies. They seem really well made and fit our 7 month old well. They are quite bulky with both of the inserts so I use one of the B&B inserts with a slim hemp or bamboo booster, and this combination seems fine for us at present although we may need to increase it as she gets bigger. It's great having two inserts with each nappy as these can be used in other pocket nappies as well. Bambinex paper liners fit perfectly between the inner gussets of these nappies.
