What Are The Benefits Of Using A Double Layer Cloth Nappy

What Are The Benefits Of Using A Double Layer Cloth Nappy

Introduction to Reusable Cloth Nappies

  • Reusable cloth nappies are a popular alternative to disposable nappies (or disposable diapers for our overseas friends), offering a range of benefits for parents and the environment.

  • Choosing reusable nappies can be a daunting task, but with the right information, parents can make an informed decision.

  • Cloth nappies are designed to be gentle on baby’s skin and can be used from birth to potty training.

  • With a wide range of styles and sizes available, including pocket nappies and sized nappies, parents can find the perfect fit for their baby.

What does a double layer or two part nappy system mean?

A two part nappy system means there is a separate nappy and a separate waterproof wrap (or nappy cover).

The nappy can be either modern fitted nappies that secure with poppers or velcro, or traditional flat nappies like terry squares that you would fasten with a Nappy Nippa (the modern equivalent of a nappy pin but without all the hassle).

Our best selling most reliable two part nappies are below:

How many wraps and reusable nappies do I need?

The normal ratio is 1 nappy wrap to 4 reusable nappies.

The waterproof outer wrap is reused about 4-5 times while you just change the inner absorbent nappy. In real life once you are past the newborn stage your average day will mean you put a clean wrap and nappy on first thing in the morning. Then throughout the day at nappy change time you will just change the inner nappy and then at bedtime you put a clean wrap and nappy on again for night time.

Pros & Cons of a Double Layer Nappy System

Pros

  • Best for longevity & budget as if a component wears out you can just replace the one part

  • Best choice if having subsequent children as they last longer

  • Game changer for poonami's as they offer bomb proof poo containment due to the two layers of containment.

  • Perfect for explosive newborn poo!

  • Offer the highest absorbency. Absorbency is ideal for night time or heavy wetters

Cons

  • Bulky when compared to all in one reusable nappies.

  • Can be slow drying due to the higher absorbency. Drying speed does vary depending on fabric (microfibre dries super fast whereas bamboo is slow).

  • Very very slightly slower to put on due to the two layers (cloth nappy and separate wrap.)

Practicality of two part cloth nappies

  • Double layer cloth nappies offer added protection and comfort for baby. The bomb proof poo containment means no unnecessary changing of baby's clothing due to poo explosions.

  • The double layer design helps prevent leaks and accidents, giving parents peace of mind.

  • Double layer cloth nappies are also easy to use and care for, making them a practical option for busy parents.

  • With a range of styles, fabrics and sizes available, parents can find the perfect double layer cloth nappy for their baby.

Environmental Benefits of Switching from Disposable Nappies

  • Disposables take hundreds of years to decompose and contribute to landfill waste, harming the environment.

  • Switching to reusable nappies can significantly reduce household waste and minimise environmental impact.

  • Cloth nappies are made from natural materials, such as organic cotton, bamboo or hemp and can be washed and reused multiple times.

  • By choosing reusable nappies, parents can reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Cost-Effectiveness of Cloth Nappies

  • While the initial cost of cloth nappies may seem higher, they are a cost-effective option in the long run.

  • Cloth nappies can be used from birth to potty training, eliminating the need of frequently buying disposable nappies.

  • With proper care, cloth nappies can last for years, making them a worthwhile investment for parents.

  • By choosing washable nappies, parents can save money and reduce their environmental impact.

Easy Washing and Drying

Contrary to popular belief, washing nappies is really very simple and you will soon have your cloth nappy routine.

  1. Put your nappies into your washing machine,

  2. run a quick wash or rinse cycle to flush them through (this is like previous generations soaking them in a nappy bucket.

  3. Next put on a long cotton wash maximum 60deg using detergent and no fabric softener.

  4. Dry as you normally dry your clothes.

The waterproof cover in a double layer reusable nappy system will air dry very quickly which is why you need fewer wraps than reusable nappies.

Trying Two Part Nappies

Parents are often intially reluctant to try two part nappies as they "seem" more complicated than an all in one nappy. I encourage you to try them as once you do you'll absolutely love the soft fabric, unbeatable containment and absorbency they offer.
