Wool Nappy Wraps

A Wool nappy wrap is the most eco friendly option for use with cloth nappies. Plastic free and polyester free made entirely of natural wool. Wool is the ultimate breathable material and is far more breathable than a PUL ( polyurethane laminate) nappy wrap. A wool nappy cover will keep baby warm in winter and cool in summer.

Wool can be used over cloth nappies from newborn right up to potty training. Wool wrap size is easily adjusted just be rolling the waistband up or down to make it longer. Wool is suitable for daytime and overnight nappies. It's the softest material you can use, it really is lovely and not itchy how people often imagine.

Nappy Rash

If your little ones suffers with nappy rash then it is always a good idea to try wool nappy covers due to the increased breathability. Wool nappy wraps also help with a heavy wetting baby as wool allows the urine to evaporate away leaving baby's nappy drier. Wool is not waterproof instead it is water resistant.

Wool covers are very soft and gentle on babies skin.  You will not get sock marks as you normally do with PUL elasticated wraps. Wool is exceptional to use for a baby with sensitive skin that easily marks when they wear elastic.

Wool is fabulous for a night time waterproof layer to keep your baby or child comfortable while sleeping,

Wool Nappy Brands

Disana are made of soft organic merino wool and are our best selling wool nappy wrap.  We also stock the beautiful Popolini patterned wool wraps. Popolini are a little thicker than Disana and feel soft and high quality.  We also stock the Baby Beehinds wool covers which are made in Australia and are a denser flatter and slimmer wool wrap. All our wool covers are pull ups so no velcro or poppers to worry about. The Nappy Lady seeks the highest quality wool wraps from around the world for the United Kingdom (UK)

Wool nappy covers can be used over any fitted cloth nappies however for the most natural combination use over cotton nappies or hemp nappies.

How Wool Nappy Covers Work

Wool absorbs liquid from your baby's cloth nappy underneath which is then neutralised by the natural lanolin in the organic merino wool.  This is wools natural self cleaning function. Wool absorbs more than 30% of it's own weight in moisture

If the nappy wrap gets damp, just hang it out to dry. Thanks to the natural self-cleaning function of the organic merino wool fibres, the nappy pants are left hygienically clean.  If the wool nappy wrap gets soiled or starts leaking, then you will need to wash it and lanolise as below.

Most wool are pull up covers but there are some that fasten with Velcro if you prefer.

Washing Wool Nappy Wraps

Wool wraps are best hand washed or machine washed on a 30C wool programme but never any hotter than 30C . If the water is hotter than 30deg C the wool can be "shocked" and will shrink and felt. In our experience we find it best to hand wash wool covers, they will maintain the shape and size of your wool nappy cover better.

Use a wool shampoo which is designed to protect and replenish wool's natural oils.

Disana Wool Lanolin Treatments

The Disana nappy system also make all the products you need to keep your wool wraps in optimal condition so you can use them on future babies too. Disana make shampoo, lanolin and gall soap. The Nappy Lady also makes solid lanolin if you prefer to make your own lanolin solution for the lanolising process.

Handwashing Wool Covers

To hand wash your organic Merino wool, dilute your wool detergent in cool water, max 30C (lukewarm only, should feel coolish), in a bowl.  Add your woollens to the bowl, gently stirring and squeezing the detergent through. Rinse using water at the same temperature, otherwise your wool will be subjected to "shock" and might felt up. So lukewarm/coolish at 30C again.

DO NOT: When you wash wool do not wring, soak, brush or rub vigorously as the wool fibres may be damaged and your garment may felt up and shrink. Just squeeze the water through.

To dry, gently squeeze water out and wrap your wool clothes in a towel to remove the excess water.

Air-dry naturally avoiding direct heat. So, hanging on a drying rack over the bath is good, or on a clothes horse, or lay flat on a dry towel. Mine often end up over the back of chairs or on the washing line (I haven't had a problem with the the heat of the English being too hot, yet!).

Re-shape while damp.
